What are Bernedoodles and why all the hype?
Bernedoodles are a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. First introduced in 2003, they were bred solely for companionship, so they thrive on love and attention from their families. They come in a variety of sizes and colors depending on the size and color of their poodle parent.
F1 Mini Bernedoodles are 50% Bernese Mountain Dog and 50% Miniature Poodle. F1b Mini Bernedoodles (our puppies!) are the offspring of an F1 Mini Bernedoodle crossed with a Miniature Poodle, resulting in 25% Bernese Mountain Dog and 75% Poodle, making them almost completely hypoallergenic and non-shedding, with an average lifespan of 14-17 years.
Bernedoodles tend to inherit the best attributes of both the Bernese and the poodle. They are an ideal family dog, loving and affectionate, with a special fondness for children. Bernedoodles are some of the happiest dogs we know; playful, silly, up for anything! And their joy is infectious, try to be sad around a laughing, wagging pup!
Bernedoodles are highly intelligent, train well and seem to learn intuitively. They are active, energetic, and love going on adventures. They are friendly and confident and get along well with other animals. They are typically good with meeting new people, although at times can be a bit reserved until they warm up to someone new.
Bernedoodles are the best of both worlds - they love to play outdoors, i.e. a romp in the park, a long walk, a trip to the beach, a sledding excursion (their thick coats make them cold tolerant!), but they also love to snuggle up on the couch by a fire with a good book. They are happy to be with you whatever you're doing, including running errands or visiting friends.
And, can we talk about how cute they are?? They're like warm, soft, fluffy teddy bears, who love to be pet and snuggled! They're impossible to resist!
So what’s their weakness?
Grooming, their constant need of grooming. They need to be professionally groomed about every eight weeks, and in addition they need to be brushed regularly to prevent matting. And if you go for a walk in the rain? Wet, muddy feet. A romp in the snow? Snowballs and icicles. Are they worth it?? Without a doubt!
Just know what you’re signing up for!
So who shouldn’t get a Bernedoodle?
-
Someone who works a lot and doesn’t have time to spend with a dog
-
Someone who doesn’t like to get outside and exercise regularly
-
Someone who can’t commit to regular grooming
-
Someone who doesn’t want more happy in their life
Bernedoodles require lots of love and attention and do not do well when left alone for long periods of time. They do great in the car, so take them along to run errands or visit friends!
Bernedoodles are also active dogs and need daily walks/runs/romps with their people, which is one of the reasons they’re so good for us! Get outside with them!
When you meet the needs of these amazing dogs, you will be richly rewarded with love, loyalty, affection, a big dose of happy, and a trimmer waistline.
